An exploratory view: Rural English teachers and challenges of teaching English for Today textbook

Abstract:

Achieving quality education is one of the important goals of SDGs that can help to ensure sustainable development. Though the government of Bangladesh is working for ensuring quality education, the educational quality is questionable in rural area comparing with urban area. Moreover, the quality of education depends on the teaching of the teachers in any context. However, in the rural context of Bangladesh how the teachers prepare the students of secondary level with the usage of English For Today textbook is important, and therefore needs to be explored. In order to investigate the contribution and involvement of the teacher in the English class, qualitative method was applied in the research where the data were derived from the interviews of English teachers and the observation of English classes. With the help of convenience sampling, three schools were chosen form three different upazilas in a district. This study attempted to reveal the challenges teachers encounter in order to implement EFT textbook. Additionally, the study explored the teaching methods, materials, perceptions of teachers towards teaching, textbook, and students. This study is significant because education policy maker will benefit from this investigation as it portrays demands of teachers with regard to logistic facilities and scope of training in rural context.

  1. This research paper is an eye opener towards the challenges of ELT practices in the rural areas. It explores and exposes possible practical challenges of teacher factor, teaching methods/methodologies, practical teaching skills, EFT textbook and student factor as requisite factors to be considered in achieving effective teaching and learning of English language in rural areas. I am thrilled by the in-depth knowledge of key constructs and thorough analysis employed in the research. Thanks.
